Termites!

For thousands of years, these tiny animals have been the most hard-working and productive didigeridoo manufacturers in the world.

A didgeridoo consists of a 1 m to 2.5 m long section of a eucalyptus tree trunk hollowed out be termites. Luckily, the light and temperature sensitive termites limit their activity to the hard and dry heartwood of the still living tree, and avoid the moisture-bearing sapwood, which also has a toxic effect on them.

So after the termites have done their wok, man comes into play. In the following video, you can watch how a didgeridoo is crafted the traditional way:

So after the termites have done their work, man comes into play. In the following video, you can watch how a didgeridoo is crafted the traditional way:
Didgeridoos which are hollowed out by termites, usually have a unique, unmistakable and captivating growling sound, which largely depends on the internal feeding traces and structures created by the termites.

Since the didgeridoo spread also throughout the Western World, many didgeridoo enthusiasts have started to craft hand made didgeridoo out of locally available woods such as oak, beech, maple and others.

Such didgeridoos most commonly have a relatively cleaner, rounder sound compared with the traditional eucalyptus didgeridoos.

Since in this case the work of the termites must be done by man, among others, two crafting methods have proven to be the most common ones: the so called sandwich and the drilling techniques.

With below two links, you are reaching a website which describes the most common crafting methods in a very good, illustrative way:
